What We Lose by Zinzi Clemmons is a novel that reads as a memoir. Filled with thoughtful vignettes that carry you through the protagonist’s coming of age, making sense of the world through the lens of an American with significant South African roots, loss of her mother to cancer – and the grief that naturally follows. There were too many f-bombs for me (which is why 3 stars instead of 4 or 5), but that aside, I really enjoyed this book. I found the story fascinating and the reflections related to her mother particularly real and insightful.
